The Roots of Our Home: History and Tradition in Piñeira (Ribadeo).
Its walls are faithful witnesses to history: on the ground floor, the sturdy stonework reaches an impressive thickness of 80 centimeters—shielding the interior from the cold and the passage of time—before tapering elegantly to 40 centimeters where the traditional slate roof rests. Beneath this roof, originally supported by three main timber beams along with purlins and planks, the memory of the past is preserved. Furthermore, in keeping with tradition, a small rectangular stone outbuilding—constructed using remnants from the original structure—houses the old wood-fired oven and keeps alive the memory of days gone by.
Although the names of its first inhabitants have faded into the mists of time, the house preserves the heartbeat of a single lineage. It remained in the hands of the same family from generation to generation until 2020. Those hardworking hands lived in close connection with their surroundings: they cultivated the land, tended to the animals, and filled their days by embracing the sea through fishing, shellfish gathering, and seaweed harvesting.
